The original name of the club was the Port Phillip Pirates and was a formed in April 1992 as one of the founding clubs of the Altona Bay Basketball Association. There were 6 teams in the inaugural year and games were played at satellite courts within the local community, whilst the Stadium was being built.

On the 5th of July 1993 the club was officially registered as the Altona Pirates Basketball Club.
